For thousands of years, shadow play, a folk art, has been a way of entertainment for the Chinese people. It is a highly comprehensive art integrating painting, drama, music, sculpture, and other arts. It spreads knowledge, promotes cultural values and entertains the community, especially the youth. Chinese shadow puppetry also passes on information such as cultural history, social beliefs, oral traditions and local customs. The relevant skills are handed down in families, in troupes, and from master to pupil. He sings, plays the erhu (a two-stringed instrument), and manipulating as many as a dozen puppets. Shadow puppetry artist Zhu Guoqiang from Jinggang ancient town in Wangcheng, Hunan province can perform shadow plays by himself. Some puppeteers are professional, while others are amateurs performing during slack farming seasons.
